Even before the planned pact was laid out Austria's Chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, had said it would not work.

However, Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer praised the Commission’s proposal and said he "welcomes the fact that there are now improvements in external border protection, returns and cooperation with third countries."

Austrian politicians are particularly pleased that the proposal did not include mandatory resettlement.

On Tuesday (22 September), Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) had declared that the mandatory resettlement of refugees had "failed," adding "it also will not work."

Austria's EU Minister, Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP), had also said as much in an interview with EURACTIV Germany. "We are against forced admissions. That has always been our red line, which we defend with all our strength," she said in the interview.
